TOM MERRILL (ELI, PENELOPE, CAPTAIN BENJAMIN MERRILL and JEMIMA SMITH) was born 23 Sep 1849 in Dallas, Texas, and died 24 Dec 1884 in Rio Grande Valley, Texas (El Paso?).  He married SUSSIE BURCH Abt. 1882 in Texas.  She was born 16 Sep 1844 in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and died 24 Dec 1884 in Rio Grande Valley, Texas (El Paso?).

THOMAS MERRILL   

     Thomas Merrill was born in 1849.  He maried Susan Burch.  They had a ranch on the Rio Grande in Texas.  On December 24, 1884, they were attacked by a group of Mexican cattle herders who chopped them to death with axes and took everything they had of value.  Tom's brother George Cornelius "Nelius" Merrill stopped by their ranch for a visit a day or two later and found their mutilated bodies.  Nelius never got over the sight of horror that met his eyes that day.  He spent the rest of his life trying to catch the Mexicans who had killed his brother and sister-in-law.
