Notes for WILLIAM WASHINGTON MERRELL:
William Washington Merrell wrote "Personal Notes of William Washington Merrell" about 1880, then added to it on March 25,1884. These notes occupy about 8 pages when typed, single spaced. They are a valuable record of our family's history, as passed down by word of mouth from John and Mary Merrell to Benjamin Smith and Martha Merrell, then to William Washington Merrell. We know, with the benefit of today's information and genealogy technology, that some of the locations are incorrect, mainly that the hanging of Captain Benjamin Merrell by the British took place in Hillsborough, North Carolina, and not in Maryland as William Washington Merrell had indicated.
A map on the wall in the Franklin County Courthouse in Carnesville, Georgia, (viewed on May 20, 2004), shows the Gum Log District as Georgia Militia District No. 213 of Franklin County, Georgia, and covers a fairly large area north of Interstate 85 and adjacent to Lake Hartwell, which is on the Tugaloo River. Gum Log Road, which is Georgia Highway No. 328 going West out of Lavonia, Georgia, goes through this district. The 1840 Federal census in the 714th District, Carroll County, Georgia, taken on (undated), lists William W. Merrell, with one male under five, one male 20 to 30, and one female 20 to 30. The second house away lists Grisham Durham, with three males 10 to 13, one male 15 to 20, one male 20 to 30, one male 40 to 50, one female 10 to 15, and one female 50 to 60. This would be Mary's father and his family. A couple of pages away in the census are listed Benjamin S. Merrell, with one male under five, one male 5 to 10, one male 10 to 15, one male 40 to 50, one female 5 to 10, two females 10 to 15 and one female 40 to 50. Eight houses from Benjamin S. is listed William Beall, with one male 5 to 10, two males 10 to 15, one male 15 to 20, one male 20 to 30, one male 40 to 50, one female under five, one female 5 to 10, one female 10 to 15, and one female 30 to 40. Next door to William Beall is listed Thomas Chandler, with two males under five, one male 5 to 10, one male 30 to 40, two females under five, one female 5 to 10, and one female the 30 to 40.
The 1850 Federal census in the 11th District, Carroll County, Georgia., taken on September 28, 1850, lists Wm. W. Merrell 35, Mary 32, Geo. W. 11, Mary 9, Sarah 6, W. P. 4, and Gresham 2 . Also listed is an overseer, Vincent Holley 28. William Washington was listed as an attorney at law, and the value of real-estate as $1,400.00. Everybody is listed with a Georgia birthplace, except Mary whose birthplace was South Carolina.
The 1870 Federal census in the Carrollton District, Carroll County, Georgia, taken on June 1, 1870, lists William W. Merrell 54, Lawyer, $2,200 Real Estate, $1,000 Personal Estate, Lucy N. 38, Charles H. 18 (Mary's youngest son) R. R. WWM was listed on the first membership roll of Carroll County Masonic Lodge No. 69, chartered November 1, 1849. He was admitted to the Georgia Bar in September, 1845, and served as U. S.
