ELDER WILLIAM PERRY MERRELL (WILLIAM WASHINGTON, BENJAMIN SMITH, JOHN, CAPTAIN BENJAMIN MERRILL and JEMIMA SMITH) was born 11 Mar 1846 in Carroll County, Georgia, and died 23 Apr 1932 in Roopville, Carroll County, Georgia.  He married SUSAN ELLENDER STEPHENSON 18 Apr 1867 in Georgia.  She was born Jan 1844 in Stone Mountain, Georgia, and died 02 Sep 1926 in Roopville, Carroll County, Georgia.

William Perry Merrell was an Elder (Minister) in the Primitive Baptist Church.

 

The 1870 Federal census for the Redbone Georgia Militia District 779, Heard County, Georgia, Franklin Post Office, taken May 21, 1870, lists Wm. P. Merrell 26, Susan E. 26, John T. 8 (this is John T. Spruill from Susan's first marriage to Zack Spruill. Zach died in the Civil War), and Adda (Ada) 11 months old, Wm. P's first child. All were born in Georgia. W. P. was a farmer.

 

The 1880 Federal census for the Eleventh- 713 Georgia Militia District, Carroll County, Georgia, taken June 10, 1880, lists William Merrell 30?, Susan E. 35, Ader (Ada) 11, Dorer (Dora) C. 9, William F. 5, James B. 3, Rufus 2, George & Charlie (Charles) 3 months (twins) of age. W. P. is a farmer, and everyone was born in GA. According to his August 19, 1919, Application for Soldier's Pension Under Act 1910, amended 1919, William P. Merrell says he enlisted May, 1864, in the 1st Georgia Cavalry, Company E, Carroll County, Georgia, and remained in this unit from date of enlistment until April 20, 1865, when the unit was surrendered or discharged near Greensboro, North Carolina, April 26, 1865. Wm. Perry was actually on detached service driving cattle for the Confederate Army between Greensboro and Savannah, Georgia, for about 3 months when the war ended, and he was paroled at Athens, Georgia, about April 20, 1865. His brother, George W. Merrell, was also in this same unit.

 

"Heard County History 1830-1990", compiled by Heard County, Georgia, Historical Society, lists W. P. Merrell as one of four Elders called to form the Canaan Primitive Baptist Church, Waresville Community, located on Georgia Hwy. 34 west of Franklin, near the Alabama line.

 

Carroll County deed records show in Book 5, page 267 that Frank Roop deeded to W. P. Merrell, on December 3, 1906, about 26 acres in Land Lot 88, District 11. This is located today on the Old Franklin Road in Roopville, the property was purchased in the early 1930's by Jimmy and Ailene Parrish, and later on it was purchased by Charles Merrell, W. P. Merrell's great grandson.

Cause of Death: Had a broken hip, at his residence, a few days before death.
