John Henry Stephens moved from Alabama to Bagwell, Red River County, Texas about 1885-86. He was one of the first of our Stephens clan to move to Texas. John Henry was born 14 December 1855 in Alabama. He married Mary I. Morris 20 September 1875 in Alabama. (Her mother was his first half cousin.) He died 2 April 1912 in Red River County, Texas with burial at Old Shamrock Cemetery. He is the son of Willis Stephens, Jr. (1824- ) and Rutha Emeline Merrill Stephens. Willis Stephens Jr. is the son of Willis Stephens, the elder (about 1775-1859) and wife, Cynthia Walker. John Henry is found as a teenager, 14 years old on the following census. They were in house/family #28/28, a next door neighbor to Willis C. Stephens.
John Henry Stephens was postmaster at Bagwell from 9 May 1899 until his death in 1912. John Henry Stephens wife was Mary Isabella Morris and was the daughter of his first half cousin, Elizabeth Stephens and Henry Morris. John Henry and Mary Isabella (Belle) had nine children and one adopted son, Joseph. They called him "Black John" because he had a dark complexion.
