Generation No. 4

GARRETT MERRELL (BENJAMINE WISEMAN MERRILL, ANDREW, Captain Benjamin Merrill & Jemima Smith) was born 1798 in Rowan County, North Carolina, and died 22 Dec 1865 in Giles County, Tennessee.  He married (1) OLLIV THOMPSON Abt. 1828 in <Giles County , Tennessee>.  She was born 1802 in South Carolina, and died 1849 in Giles County , Tennessee.  He married (2) AMY ANA WALKER 11 Mar 1853 in Lincoln County, Tennessee, daughter of ZADOCK WALKER and MARY HENDRICKS.  She was born 20 Jul 1832 in Alabama, and died 09 May 1902 in Malone Cemetery, Lincoln County, Tennessee.

Notes for GARRETT MERRELL:

Benjamin Merrell, son of Andrew, came to Giles County Tennessee between 1810-1820. Garrett Merrell was the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Garrett Merrell. An older brother of Garrett was John Merrell, and a younger brother by a second wife to Benjamin was also named Benjamin. His full name was Benjamin Wiseman Merrell.  The Merrells were farmers and fishermen. Garrett lived on Sinking Creek east of Elkton, TN, almost on the Lincoln County line. From his estate settlement which is in Giles County, TN, it looks as if he might have run some kind of business since it showed numerous small debts of people in that area. Many of the families are still there. He was not far from Morrell’s Mill (not a misspelling…that is another local family), but it is not known that he himself had a saw mill. He married twice. Garrett married (1) Olive Thompson, which is my g-g-grandmother and (2) Amy Walker. With the two wives, he had 25 children, but some did not live. The Merrells used to be numerous around the Elkton, Ardmore area. They lived just inside Giles (a half mile maybe) from Lincoln County, but had land over inside Lincoln County where he lived until he died.
